Giant vs Miniature Dogs: Same Breed or Two Breeds?

You see a huge dog next to an identical miniature one and conclude it's the same breed in two sizes. Sometimes it is. Sometimes they are two separate breeds, each with its own registry — and who decides that isn't the size of the dog.

Is the miniature dog the same breed as the big one?

It depends on the breed. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale handled similar cases in two opposite ways:

BreedHow the FCI treats itFCI standard no.
PoodleOne breed, four sizes: standard, medium, miniature and toy172
DachshundOne breed, three sizes: standard, miniature and kaninchen148
SchnauzerThree distinct breeds181 (giant), 182 (medium), 183 (miniature)
PinscherTwo distinct breeds184 (German), 185 (miniature)

In every case the small one was deliberately created from the large one. That's why they look so alike — they are sister breeds. What changes is what the registry did with them afterward.

How does the Dachshund separate its three sizes?

Not by weight. By the measurement of the chest circumference, taken when the dog is at least fifteen months old — the age at which he has stopped growing.

  • Standard: chest over 35 cm
  • Miniature: between 30 and 35 cm
  • Kaninchen: up to 30 cm

The size description for each breed, with the official measurements, is in the American Kennel Club profiles.

Kaninchen means rabbit in German, and the name is literal: it was the size of the burrow the dog had to enter after the game.

Why doesn't the Schnauzer follow the same logic?

Because the history of the three populations diverged enough for the federation to register them as different breeds, each with its own standard and its own number. The giant and the miniature are not "the Schnauzer in another size" on paper — they are relatives with their own papers.

What NOT to do

  • Don't buy a "mini Dachshund" based on the stated weight. The official classification is by chest, measured from 15 months; a puppy has no defined size yet.
  • Don't assume the miniature has the health of the large one scaled down. Separate populations accumulate different predispositions.
  • Don't use "toy" as a synonym for miniature. In the Poodle they are distinct sizes within the same standard.

Frequently asked questions

Are giant and mini Dachshunds different breeds?

No. They are the same breed, FCI standard 148, separated by chest circumference.

Is the miniature Schnauzer a puppy of the giant Schnauzer?

No. They are distinct breeds, with separate standards — 183 and 181 — even though they descend from a common stock.

What is kaninchen in the Dachshund?

It is the smallest of the three sizes, with a chest of up to 30 cm measured from 15 months of age. The word means rabbit in German.
