About My Pet Magazine

My Pet Magazine is an independent guide to cat and dog food. We read the labels so you don't have to — and we score every food with the same published method, so you can compare a $20 bag with a $90 bag on equal terms.

What we compare

Our U.S. catalog covers 104 dry food recipes — 53 for cats and 51 for dogs — from 26 brand names as they appear on the bag (Purina ONE and Purina Pro Plan, for example, are counted separately). Every recipe in it has a verified Amazon.com listing, so you can check the product and the price yourself.

The label data — guaranteed analysis, calorie content, ingredient list — was collected from manufacturer and retailer pages between August 30 and September 3, 2026.

How we score

Every food gets a technical score built from two indexes:

IDNM

Nutrient density

Protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, calories and fiber, measured on a dry-matter basis against targets for your pet's species, life stage, size and lifestyle.

IPFI

Ingredient quality

What the ingredient list tells us: named meat sources, preservatives, artificial colors, ingredient splitting, and functional extras like taurine or omega-3s.

People collect the label data. The algorithm does the scoring — nobody on our team adjusts a score by hand. The full method, with every weight and threshold, is on our Methodology page.

How we make money — and why it doesn't move the scores

When you buy a food through one of our Amazon links, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Amazon sets the commission — brands don't pay us anything, and no brand can buy a position, a review or a better score.

Scores are calculated before any commercial consideration comes into play. If a brand wants a higher score, the only way to get it is to improve the recipe.

Keeping it current

Recipes change, sometimes without any change on the front of the bag. When we learn that a recipe changed — from a new label, a new product page or a reader's note — we re-collect its data and the score is recalculated.
