How Much Does Dog Food Cost per Month? Cost by Dog Size

Food for an adult 10 kg (22 lb) dog costs between $12.68 and $47.25 per month, depending on the brand, in a calculation we ran with the average price and energy per kilogram of 4 dog foods in the catalog. A 5 kg (11 lb) dog falls between $7.54 and $28.09; a 30 kg (66 lb) dog, between $28.90 and $107.71.

The gap between the floor and the ceiling comes from two numbers: how far a food goes per kilogram and how much the kilogram costs. The math below shows both.

How much do you spend on dog food per month?

An adult 10 kg (22 lb) dog needs about 619 kcal a day, by the FEDIAF reference value for adult dogs aged 3 to 7 years. On a food with 3,900 kcal per kilogram, that is about 160 g (5.6 oz) a day, or 4.8 kg (10.6 lb) a month. Across these 4 foods, the bill is $12.68 to $47.25.

The starting point is energy need. FEDIAF, the European pet food industry federation, gives for dogs aged 3 to 7 years a value of 110 kcal per kg of body weight raised to the power of 0.75, with a range of 95 to 130 (Table VII-6 of the FEDIAF guidelines, 2024). The same table warns that the values are "starting points": a real dog needs more or less depending on activity, breed and temperament.

We used FEDIAF's 110 kcal, the same calculation as the dog food cost calculator. The foods come from the catalog, with the average price and package weight of each product. All four are adult formulas not tied to a dog size (no small-breed or large-breed recipes), so the same food fits every row of the table.

How much does it cost by dog size (5, 10, 20, 30 kg)?

Cost grows with weight, but not in the same proportion: a 30 kg dog weighs 6 times more than a 5 kg dog and eats about 4 times more (1,410 kcal a day against 368). On the cheapest food, the month runs from $7.54 (5 kg) to $28.90 (30 kg); on the priciest, from $28.09 to $107.71.

30 kg / 66 lb (about 358 to 397 g/day; 12.6 to 14.0 oz)$28.90$58.27$99.87$107.71

Values are per 30-day month, in US dollars, at the catalog's average price. The real price changes with the store, the promotion and the bag size. Prices and the makeup of each product are on the product pages in the dog food ranking.

Does a pricier dog food cost much more per month?

Yes, and the bill follows the price per kilogram. In this sample the monthly cost has the same order as the price per kg: the cheapest food per month (Diamond Naturals) is also the cheapest per kg, and the priciest (ORIJEN Original) costs 3.7 times as much for the same 10 kg dog ($47.25 against $12.68).

For the 10 kg dog, Blue Buffalo costs $12.88 more per month than Diamond Naturals ($25.56 against $12.68). Fromm Gold costs $18.25 more than Blue Buffalo ($43.81 against $25.56), and ORIJEN Original costs $3.44 more than Fromm Gold ($47.25 against $43.81).

Price per kilogram explains the distance: $2.43 for Diamond Naturals ($1.10 per lb, 40 lb bag), $5.00 for Blue Buffalo ($2.27 per lb, 30 lb bag), $8.82 for Fromm Gold ($4.00 per lb, 30 lb bag) and $10.03 for ORIJEN Original ($4.55 per lb, 23.5 lb bag).

Energy per kilogram weighs little: the 4 foods sit between 3,550 and 3,940 kcal/kg, so the daily portion changes little and almost all of the cost difference comes from price per kilogram.

Does the pricier food go further? Only a little. ORIJEN Original needs 17 g less per day than Diamond Naturals for the 10 kg dog (157 g against 174 g, about 10% less), but costs 4.1 times as much per kg ($10.03 against $2.43). In this sample, the extra energy does not pay for the extra price.

How can you lower the spending without worsening the food?

Three adjustments lower the bill without downgrading the food: buying the bigger bag, measuring the portion in the bowl and comparing price per kilogram instead of price per bag. Each one uses the numbers in the table above, and none requires switching brand or line.

Buy the bigger bag. The 40 lb (18.1 kg) bag of Diamond Naturals comes to $2.43 per kilogram; the 23.5 lb (10.7 kg) bag of ORIJEN Original, to $10.03. In this sample, the largest bag has the lowest price per kg and the smallest bag has the highest, though these are different brands; when the same food comes in several bag sizes, compare the price per kilogram of each. A big bag only pays off if the food is eaten before it loses freshness: for a 5 kg (11 lb) dog eating 104 g of Diamond Naturals a day, a 40 lb bag lasts about 5.8 months (18,144 g ÷ 104 g = 174 days).

Measure the portion. Weighing what goes into the bowl prevents silent waste. FEDIAF records that energy recommendations "may overestimate energy needs by 10 to 60 %" and that, to avoid excess weight, it may be better to start from a lower calculated value and add as needed. Every 10% less food in the bowl is 10% less in the month: $4.38 for a 10 kg dog eating Fromm Gold Adult Chicken (10% of $43.81).

Compare price per kilogram, not price per bag. Divide the price by the package weight before you decide. A $106.93 bag of ORIJEN Original (23.5 lb, 10.7 kg) costs less at the register than a $120.00 bag of Fromm Gold (30 lb, 13.6 kg), but more per kilogram: $10.03 against $8.82. The dog food comparison tool shows each product's energy side by side, and the cost calculator turns the result into dollars per month for your dog's weight.
