4 Dog Breeds That Had Real Jobs Before Becoming Pets

The pet dog is a recent idea. Before it, a breed was a job description — and the body of each one was designed for the shift it worked.

What was the original job of each of these breeds?

BreedJobWhat the body gained from it
RottweilerCarrying the butcher's moneyImposing size and a strong bond with a single owner
NewfoundlandWork in the waterDense coat, webbed paws, giant size
Siberian HuskyLong-distance transportEndurance and energy efficiency in motion
Saint BernardRescue on a mountain crossingKeen sense of smell and mass to break a path through snow

Why was the Rottweiler the butcher's dog?

Because it was the walking safe.

In Germany, the butcher tied the pouch with the day's change around the dog's neck and sent it home alone. No thief went near that animal. The breed's old nickname preserves this to this day: Metzgerhund, which literally means butcher's dog. The breed's working history is in the American Kennel Club profile.

Notice that the job was not to intimidate. It was to transport value reliably — which takes a dog that bonds strongly to one owner and does not get distracted on the way.

And the other three?

The Newfoundland worked in the water: it pulled fishermen's nets and pulled people out of the cold. Its coat is oily and dense for that reason, and its paws have webbing between the toes.

The Husky pulled sleds over enormous distances for the Chukchi people, in northeastern Siberia. It was not sport: it was the transportation of an entire people.

The Saint Bernard worked at the mountain hospice the monks kept high in the Alps, helping those who got lost on the crossing. It did not carry cargo — it found people.

What NOT to do

  • Do not adopt a working breed expecting a still apartment dog. The energy expenditure was selected together with the body.
  • Do not confuse the Rottweiler with an aggressive guard dog. The original job depended on reliability and bonding, not reactivity.
  • Do not underestimate the need for a task. A breed designed for a shift does better with something to do every day.

Frequently asked questions

What does Metzgerhund mean?

Butcher's dog, in German. It is the old nickname of the Rottweiler, tied to carrying the merchant's money.

Did the Saint Bernard carry a barrel of brandy around its neck?

No. The barrel image comes from a 19th-century painting and became folklore; it is not part of the breed's documented work at the Alpine hospice.

Did the Husky and the Malamute do the same job?

Both pulled sleds, but with different profiles: the Husky was selected for distance and speed, the Malamute for heavy loads over shorter routes.
