Is a Big Bag of Dog Food Worth It? Real Cost per Pound

In our catalog, dog food in bags of 10 kg (22 lb) or more costs a median $5.00 per kg ($2.27 per lb) across 27 foods, against $10.65 per kg ($4.83 per lb) in bags up to 3 kg (6.6 lb) across 14 foods. The big bag is usually much cheaper per kilogram, but it only pays off if the food is eaten before it goes stale.

That number compares different foods, not the same product in two sizes. The math below separates the two things.

Is buying a big bag of dog food cheaper?

Usually, yes. Among the 51 dog foods in the catalog with a listed bag weight, the median price falls from $10.65 per kg ($4.83 per lb) for bags up to 3 kg to $5.00 per kg ($2.27 per lb) for bags of 10 kg or more. These medians mix brands and recipes, so they do not prove size alone.

The medians also carry a bias: 13 of the 14 small bags are small-breed or puppy formulas (the other is a senior formula), which tend to cost more per kilogram. The 10 foods in bags between 3 and 10 kg are left out of both groups.

To see it in practice, look at the price per kilogram of specific foods, all calculated from the average price and bag weight on each product page:

FoodBagAverage pricePer kgPer lb
Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice6 lb (2.7 kg)$20.68$7.60$3.45
Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice35 lb (15.9 kg)$74.55$4.70$2.13
Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken & Brown Rice Adult30 lb (13.6 kg)$68.10$5.00$2.27
Diamond Naturals All Life Stages Chicken & Rice40 lb (18.1 kg)$46.80$2.58$1.17

Watch the first two rows: they are separate catalog entries with different recipes. The 6 lb food lists natural preservatives, 17% fat and 4,075 kcal per kg; the 35 lb food lists 16% fat and 3,790 kcal per kg. The gap of $2.90 per kg ($1.32 per lb) mixes bag size and recipe, so it does not prove the big bag saves money. For that test, compare the same product in two sizes, on the label and at the store.

How long does a 35 lb bag of dog food last?

It depends on the dog's weight: a 35 lb (15.9 kg) bag lasts from 43 to 189 days. A 5 kg (11 lb) dog takes about 5.5 to 6 months to finish it; a 30 kg (66 lb) dog, a little over a month and a half. The math is 15,876 g divided by the daily portion.

The portion comes from the energy an adult dog burns, using FEDIAF values (95 to 110 kcal per kg of body weight raised to the power of 0.75), divided by the 3,790 kcal per kg of Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice, the 35 lb food in the catalog:

Dog weightPortion per dayHow long a 35 lb bag lasts
5 kg / 11 lb84 to 97 g (3.0 to 3.4 oz)164 to 189 days
10 kg / 22 lb141 to 163 g (5.0 to 5.8 oz)97 to 113 days
20 kg / 44 lb237 to 274 g (8.4 to 9.7 oz)58 to 67 days
30 kg / 66 lb321 to 372 g (11.3 to 13.1 oz)43 to 49 days

FEDIAF treats these values as starting points. A real dog needs more or less depending on activity and breed, so the real duration changes. Weigh the portion for a few weeks and redo the math with what your dog actually eats.

Does dog food lose quality once the bag is open?

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists, among the advantages of dry food, the option of storing the unused portion at room temperature. It sets no deadline for use after the bag is opened, and neither does this page: the deadline and the way to store it are the ones on the package label.

What the duration math shows is the practical risk. The longer a bag takes to finish, the longer the food stays open. For the 5 kg dog, a 35 lb bag stays open for up to six months; for the 30 kg dog, a little over a month and a half.

To check the source, read the Merck Veterinary Manual page on dog and cat foods.

When does a smaller bag make more sense?

A smaller bag makes more sense when the big one will not be finished within the period given on the package label. A 5 kg (11 lb) dog with a 35 lb bag is the typical case: the bag lasts more than five months. There, the discount per kilogram can turn into waste.

Three practical rules, using the numbers above:

Dogs up to 5 kg (11 lb). Compare a bag up to 3 kg (6.6 lb) with one of 10 kg (22 lb) or more by price per kilogram, and check whether the big bag fits the period on the label. If it does not, the smaller bag protects the food.

Dogs around 10 kg (22 lb). A 35 lb bag lasts 97 to 113 days, about three and a half months. Check the period on the label before you carry it home.

Dogs of 20 kg (44 lb) or more. A 35 lb bag runs out in about two months or less, and the savings per kilogram usually pay off. In a home with two dogs, the duration is cut in half.

To compare the price per kilogram of any food in the catalog, use the dog food comparison tool. The rule also works outside it: divide the price by the bag weight before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is a big bag of dog food cheaper per kilogram?

In the catalog, usually yes. The median is $5.00 per kg for bags of 10 kg (22 lb) or more and $10.65 per kg for bags up to 3 kg (6.6 lb). These are different foods, so check the same product in both sizes.

How long does a 35 lb bag of dog food last for a 10 kg dog?

From 97 to 113 days, with a portion of 141 to 163 g a day on a food with 3,790 kcal per kg. A more energy-dense food goes a little further.

Do big and small bags have the same recipe?

Not always. In the catalog, Purina Pro Plan Small Breed Shredded Blend (6 lb) and Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Shredded Blend (35 lb) are separate entries, with different fat and energy per kilogram. Read the label before comparing.

The 35 lb bag lowers the price per kilogram, but the savings only exist if the food is finished within the period on the label. Divide the price by the weight, work out how many days a bag lasts for your dog's weight, and compare recipes, not just sizes.
